The 2026 Peach Season From Frieden: A Short-Crop Field Guide

The Highway 290 corridor between Fredericksburg and Stonewall looks quieter this June than it has in a decade. The peach stands are still there, the hand-painted signs are still there, but the tables inside are holding blackberries and plums and jars of last year's preserves where flats of Dixiland and Harvester used to be stacked three high. If you have driven that stretch in a normal July, the difference is obvious before you park.

For a Frieden household, the reroute matters more than the shortage. Fredericksburg's peach economy has not gone away in 2026. It has narrowed, and the neighbors who know which farms are still selling what, on which days, are eating better this summer than the day-trippers who pull off 290 at the first sign they see. This post is a working map of that narrower season.

Why 2026 is a ten-percent year

Peach trees are picky about winter.
